Teak furniture care maintenance
TIPS
- Do not scrub back & forth – it will cause discoloration
- Clean the entire surface area – spot-cleaning will lead to uneven shading
- Avoid using bleach, steel wool, or hard-bristle brushes
- To remove saltwater, hose down regularly
- Teak turns grey from the sun’s UV rays, not from water. Keep teak in the shade if you want it to weather slowly
- Do not use any teak cleaner on the finished teak
- Although teak itself will not mildew, dirt and other foreign substances on the wood can mildew. Mildew can also form when the wet teak is covered before completely drying. This occurs more commonly in warm, humid climates. If this happens, follow the cleaning instructions above immediately to prevent stains that are difficult to remove
MAINTENANCE
- If you choose to do absolutely nothing and leave raw teak outside in all weather conditions, it will get a weathered grey patina over time caused by UV rays.
- If you want to revert back to a golden honey color, simply pressure wash or use 220-grit sandpaper. A teak cleaner can also help remove any weathering, grey patina, marks, debris, or mildew.
- Use a teak sealer (water or oil-based) if you want the golden honey look to last. The water-based product we recommended is called “Golden Care Teak Protector”. Apply using a traditional household sponge or towel. One layer is sufficient every 10-12 months (weather conditions dependent).
- A secondary shield can be applied after the protector. We recommend “Golden Care Teak Shield”. This water-based sealer is to be applied after the protector has completely dried. This product will help bead up any rain or liquids, preventing watermarks.
